A Moscow Mule is vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer, served in a copper mug because the metal keeps it cold and looks great in photographs. Three ingredients, one cocktail — the variations are about the quality of each. Here's the version we make at the bar with our date-based vodka.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Oasis Vodka
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
- 4–5 oz quality ginger beer (Fever-Tree, Goslings, or Reed's Extra)
- Lime wedge for garnish
- Plenty of ice
Method
- Fill a copper mug (or a tall glass) with ice.
- Add the vodka and lime juice.
- Top with ginger beer.
- Stir once briefly.
- Garnish with a lime wedge. Drink immediately.
Notes
The ginger beer matters. Most American "ginger beer" is actually ginger soda — sweet, mild, no bite. Real ginger beer (Fever-Tree, Goslings, Reed's Extra) is sharp, dry, and burns slightly going down. The whole drink turns on this one ingredient.
Why date vodka. Oasis's softness lifts the Mule. With a sharper grain vodka, the Mule can taste angular — the ginger and lime fight. Date vodka rounds the edges.
Copper mug optional. The traditional vessel. The metal cools fast and the patina looks great. A tall glass works fine if you don't have one.
Variations
- Kentucky Mule. Bourbon instead of vodka. Different drink, also good.
- Mexican Mule. Tequila or mezcal instead of vodka.
- Gin Mule. Gin instead of vodka. Brighter, more aromatic.
