The Cosmopolitan was the most-ordered cocktail of the 1990s and then it became uncool, and now it's coming back. The honest version — vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime, real cranberry — is a great drink. Here's the recipe with a date-based vodka, which makes a softer, less aggressive Cosmo.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Oasis Vodka
- 1 oz Cointreau (or Combier; not triple sec)
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.5 oz cranberry juice (unsweetened, not cranberry cocktail)
- Lemon twist or flamed orange peel
- Ice for shaking
Method
- Chill a coupe glass.
- Add vodka, Cointreau, lime juice, and cranberry juice to a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake hard for ten seconds.
- Double-strain into the chilled coupe.
- Express the lemon or orange peel over the surface and drop it in.
Notes
Real cranberry juice. The grocery-store Cranberry Cocktail is corn syrup with a hint of cranberry. Use 100% unsweetened cranberry juice. The drink will be tart — that's the point.
Cointreau, not triple sec. Triple sec is generic; Cointreau is the specific orange liqueur the original Cosmo recipe calls for. The character is meaningful.
