The Coachella Valley: A Perfect Spot for Date Growing

The Coachella Valley produces almost all of the United States' Medjool dates — the fruit we distill into Oasis Vodka. Here's why California dates are the world's best, and how the valley became an unlikely piece of Middle Eastern desert transplanted to Riverside County.

The Coachella Valley grows 95% of America's Medjool dates. If you've eaten a fresh Medjool in the United States — or drunk a glass of Oasis Vodka — it started here, in a narrow desert basin two hours east of Hollywood. This is the story of how North Africa's most storied fruit ended up in California, and why it thrives here better than almost anywhere else.

Dates in California: an accident of the USDA

Medjool dates are native to Morocco. They arrived in the Coachella Valley in 1927 — nine offshoots smuggled out of a diseased Moroccan grove by USDA plant explorer Walter Swingle, quarantined for a decade in Nevada, then planted in a valley in California that no one had figured out how to farm profitably. Within thirty years, those nine offshoots had multiplied into a US industry. Today, the American Medjool crop traces back to those original nine trees.

Why the Coachella Valley works

Date palms have very specific climate requirements: hot, dry summers with daytime temperatures above 110°F for weeks at a time; cool winters that don't freeze; low humidity; access to deep groundwater. There are only a few places in the world that hit all four — the North African date belt, parts of Iran and Iraq, and the Coachella Valley.

The valley sits below sea level in some places. It's ringed by mountains that block Pacific moisture. Summer temperatures routinely crest 120°F. And the aquifer is fed by snowmelt from the San Bernardino Mountains, giving the trees deep-water access that surface irrigation alone couldn't provide. It's an inadvertent recreation of the North African oasis climate, right here in Riverside County.

Why Medjools specifically

Of the thousands of date varieties grown worldwide, Medjools are the largest, softest, and most caramel-sweet — the "king of dates" in Moroccan tradition. They also produce a distinctive flavor when fermented: notes of honey, dried fig, and a subtle floral top note that survives distillation.

When we distill Medjools into Oasis Vodka, the result is a spirit softer and more distinctive than any grain vodka. The fruit character doesn't overpower — it's not a flavored vodka — but it's unmistakably there.

The date festival, if you're ever in the area

Every February, the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival runs for ten days in Indio, an hour east of Palm Springs. It's a working agricultural fair with a Middle Eastern theme, camel races, and more date-tasting than any human needs. If you're anywhere near LA between mid-February and early March, drive out. Nothing gives you a better sense of what dates mean to this region.

How the fruit becomes vodka

The full production process:

  1. Sort and pit. We receive fresh Medjools from Coachella Valley growers, sort them, and remove the pits by hand.
  2. Mash. The dates are mashed with warm water to release their sugars — no additional sugar is added; the fruit has plenty.
  3. Ferment. Yeast turns the sugars into alcohol over several days in one of our two 1,875-gallon fermenters.
  4. Distill. The fermented mash goes into our 1,000-gallon Vendome copper pot still. Twice-distilled for smoothness, cut carefully to preserve the floral top note.
  5. Rest and bottle. The finished spirit rests briefly, then is bottled by hand at 80 proof.
