In 2016, Ferris, Jeff, and Larry, three friends who had spent their lives in and around Hollywood, started asking a simple question: why did a neighborhood synonymous with cocktails, glamour, and celebration have no distillery within its own borders?
The answer traced back to a lingering post-Prohibition reality. While alcohol production had returned broadly, alcohol regulations in California effectively kept distilleries out of Hollywood for decades. It wasn’t a single active ban so much as a system no one had revisited, and for nearly a century, no one had pushed to change it.
That changed with the passage of California Assembly Bill 1246, which created a carve-out for craft distilleries and opened the door for small producers to operate under a new framework. Even with that shift at the state level, making it work on the ground still meant navigating local zoning, permits, and approvals that hadn’t been built with distilleries in mind.
So they got to work. Years of zoning meetings later, they had secured the necessary permits, obtained their license, and found a home in a 1920s mortuary on Santa Monica Boulevard.
